How to Savor the Last Days of a Southern California Summer

How to Savor the Last Days of a Southern California Summer

SoCal weather may be temperate year-round, but there is still something particularly pleasant about the summer months. For starters, school’s out, the sun stays out longer and skin glows with a special sun-kissed radiance (no bronzer required).

So, in order to relish these last few days of coveted sunshine, we recommend spending them outdoors in some of the most idyllic locations in and around Los Angeles.

From a weekend jaunt by the ocean to an outdoor picnic under the stars, consider these spots for spending some quality time during this late-summer season.

Enjoy the pool, game room and various cultural events at the Annenberg Community Beach House along the beautiful coast of Santa Monica. There is no admission fee, but you should make a reservation ahead of time because seating is on a first-come-first-serve basis. But, ask anyone who frequents the House and he or she will tell you that a short wait and a little advance planning are well worth it.

The pool is open only until the second week of September, so head there some time in the next couple of weeks to enjoy the very best of the L.A. lifestyle.

Newly reopened after months of repair, L.A.’s famed Runyon Canyon is a regular spot for Hollywood’s hikers, yogis and celebrities.

Pack in a serious workout by climbing a steep, winding trail or bring the family (and fur babies) for a stroll up a more gradual, paved incline.

There are plenty of exercise options at Runyon Canyon for hikers of all levels and spectacular views of the entire city (and the Hollywood sign) that are second to none.

Before the air turns cool, take the beautiful drive down to Laguna Beach for some real R&R. The Surf and Sand Resort is a great escape but still lies right in Los Angeles’ “backyard.” As a pristine beachfront property with a luxurious yet laid-back vibe, it’s a late-summer getaway that will allow everyone to recharge before heading into fall.

Listen to jazz, dine and hang with friends and family under the setting sun over the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. These free jazz concerts attract families from the surrounding area, so it’s a great chance to mingle with new people, hear live music and bask in the glow of a late-summer sun.

This family-friendly event technically happens now through November, but realistically, once school and after-school activities kick into full gear, it will be harder to get the whole gang over there.

Admission to the jazz concert is free. Don’t forget to bring blankets and a delicious picnic to enjoy as the sun goes down.
