HOW TO PROTECT AND PERFECT YOUR SUMMER HAIR, SKIN AND MAKEUP LIKE A PRO

Despite everything we know about the sun’s harmful effects, it’s nearly impossible to resist the urge to soak up some rays once summer has set into full swing.

Though not as serious as sun damage, there’s also the annoyance of makeup melting with heat-induced sweat and mascara smudging once you plunge into the water. For that, having the right protection for both your face and hair is key, whether lying out, splashing in the ocean or just hanging outdoors. So, consider these celebrity hair stylist- and makeup artist-approved ways to beat the heat while still looking gorgeous.

By using the right products to protect your skin and hair, plus waterproof items that keep your makeup set all day, warm-weather beauty can be as easy as it is effective. Makeup artist Kirin Bhatty, who counts Rosario Dawson and Freida Pinto as clients, and hair stylist Derek Yuen, who styles the hair of Bryce Dallas Howard and Nicola Peltz, share the summer-beauty secrets they count on in order to keep their star clients looking and feeling great, no matter how hot it gets out there.

What are your biggest beauty rules when it comes to protecting hair from summer weather?

When it comes to summertime weather, the two concerns I have are the drying effects of the sun and color fading. Sun exposure can affect the protein structure of hair, which can deplete moisture and lead to a rougher cuticle, resulting in frizz. It also can fade color-treated hair and change the color all together with the salt or chlorine of a pool. To prep and protect, try to limit sun exposure by covering up with a hat or using hydrating hair products with UV protection.

What is your recommended type of sun protection?

Rene Furterer Solaire Protective Summer Fluid. It has UV filters to protect hair and scalp from sun damage, as well as a lightweight oil to hydrate while protecting. It can be misted over dry or damp hair before heading out into the sun.

What are the best treatments for hair that’s exposed to sun, salt water or chlorine?

For hair that has already been exposed to sun, salt water or chlorine, I like to do a two-step process. First, I like to use Kenra Clarifying Shampoo. It will help remove any salt, minerals or buildup in the hair, leaving the hair with a brighter luster. It is also safe to use on color-treated hair to remove chlorine. After clarifying, I always recommend Kérastase Masque UV Defense Active. It helps replenish moisture to the hair, strengthen the cuticles and protect with UV filters. Use two quarter-sized amounts on damp, towel-dried hair, from roots to ends. Then, comb through and wrap in a warm towel for 10 minutes and rinse out. Repeat this once or twice a week.

What are your recommended hairstyles for hair that’s getting too oily or frizzy in summer heat and humidity?

My favorite hairstyle right now is a simple rope braid. It’s easy to do. It gets hair up and out of the way and can even be twisted up into a chic bun to beat the heat. If hair is too oily, spray some Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray, which contains zeolite, a microporous mineral that soaks up some of the oil. Or if hair is too frizzy, mist Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Primer to add moisture and take the frizz down a notch. Once hair is pulled into the rope braid/bun, don’t forget to use sunscreen on face, ears and all around the front and back hairline. Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist is SPF 50 and will dry and stay matte.

What are your biggest beauty rules when it comes to protecting your skin from summer heat?

Sun care is essential—especially in California where we spend a lot of time outside. I always wear face sunscreen and make sure I pay attention to my chest, neck and hands, too.

What is your recommended type of sun protection?

I love La Prairie SPF 50 face moisturizer and Kate Sommerville Body Glow Sunscreen for body.

Should women switch their foundation to a different shade for summer?

I think going one-half to a full shade up for summer is good so there isn’t a stark difference between your face and body. If having two foundations is not your thing, you always can add a few drops of liquid bronzer to your current foundation to warm up the color a bit. Try Laguna Liquid Bronzer from NARS.

How do you advise keeping makeup waterproof?

I think a setting spray is helpful like Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray. Also, opting for waterproof versions of your favorite shades is always good, too. Makeup Forever, Smashbox and Dior all have waterproof products that will get you through a hot summer day.

How can people deal with makeup that drips off with sweat during the day?

Primer is a great place to start. It provides a barrier between your makeup and your skin so it lasts longer. I love and swear by Smashbox’s primer.
